BMW Functional Areas
The research and development department of BMW carries out the following jobs. Which are to develop new products such as cars, for example the new BMW M3. Also the research and development department of BMW improves existing products such as the BMW 1 series, which they improved to the BMW 3 series. They develop their new products by taking the best features from their old products, by this they keep the best features of their old products and improve the not so good features of their old products.
The research and development department of BMW uses ICT to carry out the following jobs. Which are to design and make new cars for BMW, by using computer packages like CAD and CAM. CAD stands for computer aided design and CAM stands for computer aided manufacture.
Finance Department
The finance department at BMW deals with the money coming in and out of BMW, which is the income and expenditure. Plus it is responsible to pay wages and salaries to the employees of BMW.
It also helps BMW raise money for it to expand or buy new machines, or buildings etc. For example if BMW wants to make a new factory it is up to the finance department to help BMW raise money to make the factory. Also it prepares BMW accounts for the Inland Revenue, which are the financial records of BMW. The reason they prepare the accounts is for the government to calculate the amount of tax BMW needs to pay.

Human Resources Department
The human resources department of BMW carries out the following jobs. Which are to recruit new staff, such as if BMW needs a new mechanic it is up to the human resources department to find the new mechanic. Also it is up to them to train the staff of BMW, so the staff is able to do their job to the highest standard possible. Another job for the human resources department is to retain staff, which is for them to be able to keep staff, who are doing really well at their job. Plus they dismiss staff, which is getting rid of staff, who are doing really poor at their job. For example the mechanic of BMW is not repairing the cars properly and slacking about on his job, so it is up to the human resources department to dismiss that member of staff. The human resources department also take care of the working conditions of the staff, which is keeping the working environment to the BMW’s staff’s needs.

Customer Service
The customer service department of BMW carries out the following jobs. Which are to provide customers with information, such as if BMW is selling a car it is up to the customer service department to provide the information on the car BMW is selling. Also the customer service department offers advice to customers, for example a BMW customer wants to buy a BMW car, and can’t afford the fixed price the customer service department can advise the customer to buy the car in a monthly payment. Plus they do after sale service, which is to provide the customer support on the product they bought. Another job is for them to deal with the customer complaints, for example a customer is not happy with the condition of the car they’ve bought from BMW, and it is up to the customer service department to solve this problem.

Which are to produce websites for the customers of BMW about the products and services of BMW, by using ICT packages like Adobe Dreamweaver. Also they use email softwares like hotmail to send email messages to the customers of BMW regarding their problem or enquiry. Marketing Department
The marketing department of BMW carries out the following jobs. Which are to carry out the market research, which provides information for the manufactures of BMW to manufacture a product which everyone will want to buy. When they carry out market research they find out what customers most likely want. Also the marketing department advertises the products and services of BMW, such as the cars, motorbikes, financial services etc. For example BMW makes a new car it is up to the marketing department to attract the right customers. Plus the marketing department does the sales of BMW, which is to put the right prices for the products of BMW. This means that the marketing department has to make the prices affordable and not cheaper than the product is made. Furthermore they do promotional offers on the products that are not being sold frequently as they were meant to. This increases the sales of BMW.
