What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?
Diversity is classified as many demographic variables such as race, religion, skin color, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, age, education, geographic origin, and skill characteristics. America’s diversity has given this country its unique strength, resilience and richness. Diversity is the unique variety of qualities. Having diversity makes everyone unique amd we all can learn from eachother if we are not the same.
Having diversity not only enables us to have a bigger impact on everyone but we all can learn from eachother when we have different backgrounds.
What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?
Ethnocentrism is judging someone elses culture by the values and practices of one’s own culture. The ethnocentric person would try to judge others to their own ethnic group such as their religion, behaviors,language, ect. These ethnic Ethnocentrism happens regualry and it is just a negative thing of what humans do.
It can cause harm to society when people look down on others because they think their ways are better. It causes racial groups to be against eachother instead of working together as one. It causes false assumptions about cultural differences. It creates bad communications between groups.
Define emigration and immigration.
Emigration means a person is leaving a specific place like Vietnam or Africa due to geopolitical factors. Immigration means someone entering a nation. Some people come to America because America allows much more freedom.
You can move up the ladder if you ever wanted to make more money. It not like if you were born poor, you will always be poor. It is totally your decision to stay poor.
What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?
Some ways I people are identified is by their religion. For example Arabs, are identified as Muslim but not all Arabs are Muslim. Some people are identified as the most obvious is their skin color and features. People are identified by age group. Cultural back ground helps someone identify them through what they do and practice.
Why do people label and group other people?
People label and group other people to get a quick thought of ways that they might behave. Sometimes people label because they want to feel better about themselves because most people have little confidence so they make people feel lower than them by giving them a bad name, Some people try to put people in the same group as themselves only, [ Some people are just copy cats and just follow the crowd knowing that its wrong. People label other people to give them a identity in the society. Labeling can give both and negative effects to the person that is being labeled. Positive grouping can increase confidence.
Define culture. Is culture limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds? Explain.
Culture is the characteristics of a certain group of people. Culture involves everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. In the United States , immigrants are populated largely by immigrants, the culture is influenced by the many groups of people that now make up the country. Every ethnic background has a culture. They all have their own way and beliefs of doing things. Backgrounds can be related to a gender or a nation, or even an age group.
