Understanding your role in contributing to children and young people’s health and safety is a priority. As new member of staff your line manager will need to know how you can apply this in your work setting. You have been asked to produce information that includes: Task1. * An outline of the health and safety policies and procedures of the work setting * Hot drinks * Emergency exit * Signed in/out * Smoking polices * Nappy changing polices * Behavioural policy * Hazardous substance Incident and accidents Awareness raising: In training for staff and volunteers includes a clear explanation of health and safety issues so that all adults are able to adhere to our policy and procedures as they understand their shared responsibility for health and safety. Safety of adults: Adults are provided with guidance about the safe storage, movement, lifting and erection of large pieces of equipment. Windows: Are protected from accidental breakage or vandalism from people outside the building. Doors: Precautions to prevent children’s fingers from being trapped in doors.
Floors: All floor surfaces are checked daily to ensure they are clean and not uneven, wet or damaged. Electrical/gas equipment: All electrical/gas equipment conforms to safety requirements and is checked regularly. Storage: All resources and materials from which children select are stored safely. Outdoor area: The area is securely fenced, checked for safety and cleared of rubbish before it is used. Adults and children are alerted to the dangers of poisonous plants, herbicides and pesticides. All outdoor activities are supervised at all times.
Hygiene: Seeking information from the Environmental Health Department and the Health Authority to ensure that we keep up-to-date with the latest recommendations. Daily routines encourage the children to learn about personal hygiene. A daily cleaning routine for the setting which includes play room(s), kitchen, rest area, toilets and nappy changing areas. Toilet area has a high standard of hygiene including hand washing and drying facilities and the disposal of nappies Fire safety and emergency evacuation: Ensure our premises present no risk of fire by ensuring the highest possible standard of fire precautions.
Fire doors are clearly marked, never obstructed and easily opened from the inside. Smoke detectors/alarms and fire fighting appliances are fitted in appropriate high risk areas of the building. Emergency evacuation procedures are approved by the Fire Safety Officer and are: clearly displayed in the premises, explained to new members of staff, volunteers and parents; and practised regularly at least once every six weeks. Food hygiene: The basis for this is risk assessment as is applies to the purchase, storage, preparation and serving of food to prevent growth of bacteria and food contamination.
Food is stored at correct temperatures and is checked to ensure it is in-date and not subject to contamination by pests, rodents or mould. There are separate facilities for hand-washing and for washing up. All surfaces are clean and non-porous, cleaning materials and other dangerous materials are stored out of children’s reach. Children do not have unsupervised access to the kitchen. * An identification of the lines of responsibility and reporting for health and safety in the work setting.
Health and safety: Ensuring all electrical appliances are checked on an annual basis by a competent person such as deputy manager or manager him self Checking and keeping stocked the First Aid Box; Routinely checking that all electrical appliances in the Provision are usable and reporting any defects to the Management Committee. Prevention and Reporting: Maintenance of property and equipment to ensure personal safety is the overall responsibility of the Management Committee.
All employees, whether paid or voluntary, are responsible for the correct and safe use of all property and equipment in the Provision and for the reporting of any faults or hazards to their supervisor or the Management Committee. The aim of any policy relating to accidents must stress that in the first instance every effort should be made to avoid an accident happening. The following list provides an indication of areas that require special attention: Beware of wet floors; Equipment should not be left turned on when unattended and in such a position as to cause others to trip over it; Doors and drawers should be closed when not in use;
Equipment should be stored in a safe manner in cupboards; Filing cabinets should not be overloaded; Climbing onto chairs or desks is not permitted. Appropriate equipment should be used to reach high levels; Step-ladders must be properly adjusted and secured. If more than the three lower steps are to be used it needs to be supported by a second person; Correct methods must be employed when lifting or moving heavy objects; Working areas must be kept tidy and clear of obstruction; Fire doors must not be wedged open.
In the event of an accident, employees, paid or voluntary, have a duty to report to their immediate supervisor any such incidents; to assist in determining the cause and to help in any subsequent investigation with the aim of preventing a recurrence. A report of all accidents should be brought to the attention of the Management Committee. Accident Record Books All accidents resulting in personal injury must be recorded in the relevant accident book. There are two accident books: For accidents within the Provision to children – kept with the First Aid Box. TASK 2 An identification of non-medical incidents and emergencies that may occur in the work setting. * Burglar * Kidnaping * Missing child * Fire * An outline of the action to take in response to the following situations: * Fires * Security incident * Emergency incident Fires: IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE * Immediately raise the alarm * If in charge of children, pass their care to the nearest member of staff * Tackle the fire if possible with the appliances provided, but WITHOUT TAKING PERSONAL RISK. * Leave the building, assisting with the evacuation of the children
Fires: ON HEARING THE FIRE ALARM * (Nominated Person) will call the Fire Service immediately * Dial 999 and ask for the Fire Service * Give the full address clearly * Evacuate the children in your care by using the nearest available exit and KEEP THE CHILDREN TOGETHER * The Person in Charge will take a roll call to ensure that no-one has been left in the building * DO NOT stop to collect personal belongings * DO NOT re-enter the building until told to do so by the Fire Service Security incident We take the security of all the children in our care very seriously. Admittance to the Nursery is only to recognised persons and we adhere to a strict policy on collection of all children. * Upon joining the Nursery you will be asked to sign authorization forms for named collectors other than yourself in an emergency, and should Emergency Collectors need to pick up your child a Password system is adopted via telephone on the day. Emergency incident * If able to moved, the child is taken into a quiet area and the Manager and the first aider is notified. The situation will be assessed and it will be decided whether the child needs to go to the hospital immediately or whether the child can wait for the parent/main carer to come. * A report of the accident will then be recorded on an accident form. Task 3 * An identification of the signs and symptoms witch may indicate that a child or a young person is injured or unwell. * Itching, crying, bruising If a child is limping that’s a sign and a symptom is going to be that he is in pain and he can’t run like every child.
If a child is unwell he is going to be withdrawn and he does not want to play and it can have fever or it can be a disease. * An identification of the circumstances when children or young people may need urgent medical attention. Examples can be when a child or a young people are have: heavy bleeding, comma, unconscious, convulsions.. etc. * An outline of your own role and responsibilities in the event of a child or young person requiring urgent medical attention. * I have to make sure that the child is confortable * I call one of my colleague for help * I report it * I record it in incident book
Task 4 * An identification of the procedures of the work setting governing the receipt, storage and administration of medicine. * If a child has an prescription from doctor * Storage in out of reach of children’s * In administration we need to read the prescription or how the parent’s told us for example with an inhaler for children that have asthma. * An explanation of how the procedures of the work settings protect both children and young people and practitioners. * Identification of risk: Where is it and what is it? * Who is at risk: Childcare staff, children, parents, cooks, cleaners etc? Assessment as to the level of risk as high, medium, low. This is both the risk of the likelihood of it happening, as well as the possible impact if it did. * Control measures to reduce/eliminate risk: What will you need to do, or ensure others will do, in order to reduce that risk? * Monitoring and review: How do you know if what you have said is working, or is thorough enough? If it is not working, it will need to be amended, or maybe there is a better solution. * Identification of risk: Where is it and what is it? * Who is at risk: Childcare staff, children, parents, cooks, cleaners etc? ACCIDENTS: Prevention and Reporting for this are responsible all my colleagues including me ACCIDENTS REPORTS BOOKS: For this are responsible my colleagues and deputy manager and the manager but not me because I’m a volunteer and it involves data protecting policies. CLEANLINESS OF PREMISES: everyone is responsible but if I find something like an object and I do not know what to do with it, or where to find it, or where to put it I will ask my colleagues and then if they do not know I ask deputy manager or the manager.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY: It is the responsibility of all users to inspect appliances for loose wiring, faulty plugs etc. , BEFORE using them. Electrical faults must be reported immediately to the deputy manager or to manager. Faulty equipment must be removed from usage and clearly labelled as such. No-one should attempt to repair the equipment themselves. All employees, whether paid or voluntary, have a responsibility to observe basic principles of electrical safety as well as inspecting appliances before use. ENVIRONMENT AND THE WORKPLACE
The Provision is legally obliged to maintain a safe and acceptable working environment in as far as is reasonable and practicable. Employees, paid or voluntary, have a responsibility to co-operate to maintain this environment if not to be reported to the deputy manager or to manager. FIRE PRECAUTIONS The Management Committee are responsible for ensuring that precautions are taken against fire through the routine maintenance of fire safety equipment, through reviewing and posting emergency fire procedures in buildings and educating employees, whether paid or voluntary, in safe practices.
It is the duty of all employees, paid or voluntary, to co-operate in the implementation of this Policy and to report to the Management Committee any instances where the property procedures are not being implemented example of wedging open of fire doors, escape routes obstructed by furniture or rubbish and the reporting of faulty electrical equipment. Within the premises, the Provision operates a Policy of No Smoking. It is the responsibility of each individual smoker to ensure that they only smoke outside the building and ensure that their cigarette is properly extinguished. FOOD HANDLING
All employees, paid or voluntary, who handle food, have a responsibility if is done underlays I need to tell the management. TASK 2 * An outline of the action to take in response to the following situations: * Emergency incident If for example in the in the event of gas leak or bomb scare. * To move the children to a safer place for example outside or play ground * to raise the alarm in the event of gas leak or bomb scare * To check if everyone is present and none is missing from our in/out form * Reassuring children that everything is going to be fine and calm them down if necessary. Informing and not or allowing children to collect personal belongings or put on coats * Not re-entering the building until I have been informed that it is safe to do so. * As a volunteer I may work in different areas of the nursery, so it is important that I know the different routes from each area. * I should be given regular opportunities to practise evacuating groups of children from the building safely.
